OxygenOS Open Beta 7 released for OnePlus 6 with OnePlus Roaming, Video Enhancer & more

With the release of the OnePlus 6T, one might have thought that OnePlus would pay more attention to its latest smartphone than its previous one. However, that isn't the case. OnePlus is continuing to push out updates to the OnePlus 6 just as briskly it was before. The latest beta update for the device is out now and it brings with it two new features and several improvements. Let's take a look at the changelog.

The two new features OnePlus is introducing with this update are Video Enhancer and OnePlus Roaming. You might mistake the former to be a camera feature but this mode enhances the colours of the videos you watch. OnePlus claims that this will provide a better viewing experience, although I'm not too sure of that. As you can see in the image above, there is not much difference with Video Enhancer off and on. In fact, with the mode enabled, the colour contrast seems to have been decreased in this particular case (look closely at the skin colour of the man, the board underneath him, and the yellow floating object). This, though, wasn't the case with every video. The colours appeared to pop up more in some videos while they looked dull in others. I would say the mode is a hit or miss for now. The feature is applicable to both locally stored videos and to streamable videos. You can access Video Enhancer from Settings > Display.

The other feature, OnePlus Roaming, lets you surf the internet without the need of a SIM. You can understand OnePlus Roaming as a virtual SIM that provides you with data, but no calls. OnePlus Roaming can be accessed from Settings > WiFi & Internet > OnePlus Roaming. When you open the setting, you will get a list of regions along with the prices of data packages. Several packages are available for a region, varying in terms of the number of days and amount of data. Some regions, in my case the United States, have a free trial plan for new users.

The OnePlus Launcher has also been looked after in this update. By default, when you swipe up from the home screen, you get the app drawer. Now, OnePlus has included an option using which you can start searching right after you swipe up.

This is quite a lot for a beta update. I am impressed by OnePlus' dedication to improving its user interface. OxygenOS Open Beta 7 is rolling out to existing beta users. If you haven't received the update so far you will get it soon. Those of you who are using a ROM other than the Open Beta will have to flash the beta. The flashable file and installation instructions can be found here.
