Everything We Know About GPT-4 So Far





Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) showed the world how a generative model of language is able to acquire world knowledge and process and generate output by pre-training on a diverse corpus with long stretches of connected text.


It is a natural language processing system that focuses on generating human language natural text. However, generating human understandable content is a challenge for machines that don't really know the complexities and nuances of language. 


GPT-1 was released in 2018 and since then OpenAI set to revolutionize the writing space with the power of artificial intelligence. 

It has been releasing models which are capable of generating text that looks realistic. Other models were released within a gap of a year, GPT-2 in 2019, and GPT-3 in 2020. If we go by this pattern, then we can expect the release of GPT-4 soon. Industry watchers believe that GPT-4 may be launched in early 2023. 


What can we expect of GPT 4?


In an exciting development, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, spoke about the imminent GPT-4 release during a question-and-answer round in an online event.


GPT-4, contrary to popular assumption, will not be any larger than GPT-3, but it will demand more computational resources, according to Altman. Given the outcry about the dangers of huge language models and how they disproportionately damage the environment and disadvantaged people, this is an interesting announcement. 


Altman also stated that the main goal would be to get the most out of the available resources.


The GPT-3 model was being used not only for writing codes, but also for blogs, stories as well as content for websites and apps. But it was reported that this model was being misused to create an entire fake blog. 


This is considered as one of the major shortcomings of GPT-3 and also one of the important reasons why people have huge expectations from GPT-4. 

Working with all parts of GPT, including data methods and fine-tuning, will help overcome this shortcoming. 


Sam Altman spoke about the new changes people can expect from GPT-4, a major one being coding, that is, Codex.

It is assumed that the new model would emphasize more on the coding aspect. 


It's worth noting that Codex was recently provided in private beta by OpenAI through API. GitHub Copilot is built on top of Codex as well. It can understand over a dozen languages and can also interpret and execute simple natural language instructions on behalf of users, allowing developers to create a natural language interface for current apps. 


One such instance is Microsoft’s recently announced GPT-3 based assistive feature for the company’s PowerApps software that converts natural language into code snippets.



With these statements, it can be assumed that OpenAI is determined to achieve artificial intelligence very soon in its new endeavours. Not only this, we can also expect OpenAI leveraging its capabilities even more!


Brief History of the GPT 3 Model: 

The GPT-3 model, or third generation Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a neural network machine learning model that generates any type of text from internet data. To generate vast amounts of relevant and complex machine-generated text, only a little amount of input text is required.


It has been used to generate articles, poetry, stories, news reports, and dialogue from a small quantity of input text, allowing for the production of enormous amounts of high-quality material. It's also being used for automated conversational tasks, such as reacting to any text typed into the computer with a new piece of text that's relevant to the situation.


What next is the FOURTH generation "GPT-4". 


The GPT-3 model had certain limitations related to the originality of the content. The copywriting tools are effective only if they generate human understandable text that looks realistic and sophisticated. Going by the patterns we can notice how OpenAI has been introducing changes in all its models. Therefore, we can expect the GPT-4 to be far more superior than its predecessors.

We can expect some amazing qualitative differences in GPT-4 and we might even see the first neural network capable of true reasoning and understanding.


Some of the changes we can expect:


An "Intelligent" System: 


The GPT-3 is not capable of identifying the badly worded text. It cannot surely generate an error-free and coherent text. 

Suppose we are sitting in a classroom and  reading some text, we can quickly identify a badly structured text and then discuss with the teacher about the anomaly. But this is a computer system which is not capable of doing it on its own. 

We can expect the GPT-4 model to be a robust system capable of detecting low quality text and introducing required changes to enhance the quality of the text. It would be able to ignore bad prompts and assess the text on its own. 

GPT-4 may implement a way of assessing the quality of a given prompt and is highly capable of self-assessment. Such a system would be rightly called an "intelligent system". 


Better Meta-Learner:


Different machine learning models can benefit from meta learning (e.g. few-shot learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, etc.). Its algorithms can create predictions using machine learning algorithm outputs and metadata as input.

We can expect GPT-4 to be a better meta-learner than its predecessors if we assume it will have a lot more parameters than its predecessors. Deep learning systems are sometimes criticised for requiring a large number of samples to learn a particular job. GPT-4 could be a boon for the copywriting space and can prove that language models can be as efficient as humans learn multitasking.


Superior in terms of Parameters:


Since GPT-3, there’s been a lot of expectation around OpenAI and its next release. Now we know it’ll come out in a few years and it’ll be extremely big. It’ll be more than 500x the size of GPT-3. The GPT-4 model is expected to surpass its predecessor GPT-3  because of its enhanced parameters. It will have 100 Trillion Parameters which is 500x the size of GPT-3.

The GPT-3 model was 100 times larger than GPT-2, at 175 billion parameters, two orders of magnitude larger than the 1.5 billion parameters in the full version of GPT-2. Therefore, we can reasonably expect the GPT-4 model to be bigger and better.


Conclusion:


GPT-4 is still in the planning phases, so there's not much to worry about. We still don't know what is going to happen, but it's best to stay informed. There are many inquiries, doubts and apprehensions. Yet, something is irrefutable: GPT-4 will be something to watch out for.
