Circular Ring 3 Launches With Contactless Payments and Haptic Alerts as Smart Ring Battle Intensifies

TL;DR

  • Circular has launched the Ring 3 with two firsts for the brand: built-in NFC contactless payments and on-finger haptic vibration alerts for calls, alarms, and notifications.
  • The new ring adds upgraded health tracking, a thinner titanium design, and up to 6 days of battery life, positioning it as a more versatile alternative to traditional fitness-focused rings.
  • Its arrival comes as competition in the smart ring market heats up following the recent launches of the Oura Ring 5 and RingConn Gen 3, both of which raised the bar on AI-driven health insights and battery performance.

French wearable startup Circular is back with its most ambitious smart ring yet. The newly announced Circular Ring 3 is the company's first ring to offer true contactless payments and silent haptic alerts directly on your finger, two features designed to make the device useful all day, not just while you sleep.

The Ring 3 is available for pre-order now starting at $299, with open sales expected later this month. It comes in four finishes — Matte Black, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold — and retains Circular's signature outer LED indicator, but in a noticeably slimmer and lighter titanium chassis.

Pay With a Tap of Your Finger

The headline feature is NFC-powered contactless payments. Through a partnership with Wallet Factory and support for Visa and Mastercard networks, users can tokenize their bank cards in the Circular companion app and then pay by simply hovering their hand over any contactless terminal. No phone or wallet required.

Circular says the payment function works even when the ring is offline and does not require a subscription, a notable contrast to some competitors who lock features behind a monthly paywall. The company uses bank-grade encryption and an automatic lock that disables payments when the ring is removed, re-authenticated via the app.

A Nudge You Can Actually Feel

The second major upgrade is a built-in haptic motor, a rarity in the smart ring category. The Ring 3 can deliver subtle vibration alerts on your finger for incoming calls, text messages, alarm clocks, inactivity reminders, and medication prompts.

Unlike the silent notifications of previous Circular rings and most rivals that rely solely on app push notifications, the haptic feedback is designed to be discreet but impossible to miss. Users can customize vibration patterns for different alert types and set silent vibrating alarms that wake you without disturbing a partner — a feature long requested by smart ring users.

Smarter Health Tracking in a Thinner Package

Beyond the new lifestyle features, Circular has overhauled its health platform. The Ring 3 includes an upgraded heart rate sensor, SpO2 monitoring, skin temperature tracking, and a new single-lead ECG capability for on-demand heart rhythm checks. Sleep analysis has been refined with improved sleep staging and a smart alarm that wakes you during a light sleep phase.

Circular claims up to 6 days of battery life on a single charge despite the thinner 2.2mm profile, and the ring remains water-resistant to 100 meters. All health data feeds into the updated Circular app, which now offers a redesigned AI assistant called Kira that provides personalized wellness recommendations, stress management insights, and cycle predictions without requiring an additional subscription fee.

A Crowded Ring Market Gets Even Tighter

The Circular Ring 3 doesn't launch in a vacuum. It arrives just weeks after two of the biggest names in the space refreshed their lineups.

Oura debuted the Oura Ring 5 in late July, focusing heavily on AI with its new Oura Advisor, more accurate 24/7 heart rate and stress tracking, and a new ceramic design. Meanwhile, RingConn launched the Gen 3 in August, making waves with its claimed 10-day battery life, advanced sleep apnea detection, and no-subscription model.

Together, those launches have shifted smart rings from niche sleep trackers to full-fledged health and lifestyle wearables. Circular's bet is that convenience features — specifically payments and haptics — will be the differentiator that wins over users who want a ring that does more than just monitor their vitals overnight.

Pricing and Availability

The Circular Ring 3 is priced at $299 for the standard model and $349 for the version with ECG functionality enabled, where regulatory approval allows. That undercuts the Oura Ring 5, which starts at $349 plus a $6.99 monthly membership for full data access, and positions it closely with the $299 RingConn Gen 3.

Pre-orders are open now through Circular's website, with shipments starting in late September. The company says contactless payment support will roll out first in Europe and the United States, with additional regions to follow in the coming months.
