Founded in London in 2015 by Theo Saville and Chris Emery, CloudNC has evolved from operating its own high-tech CNC factories into a pure-play software company focused on one of manufacturing's most stubborn problems: how long it takes to go from CAD design to finished part.
Why Manufacturing Needs an AI Assist Right Now
The timing is no accident. Western manufacturers are facing a perfect storm of reshoring pressure, surging demand from aerospace, defense and energy, and a critical shortage of experienced machinists and programmers.
In CNC machining, programming a machine tool to cut a complex aerospace component can take hours or even days, while the actual cutting takes minutes. CloudNC estimates programming and setup account for the vast majority of production delays and costs.
That bottleneck has only worsened as supply chains shift back to the U.S. and UK. With geopolitical tensions driving investment in domestic production, factories are booked out but unable to hire fast enough to keep spindles turning.
How CAM Assist Is Automating the Bottleneck
CloudNC's answer is CAM Assist, an AI-powered plug-in for existing CAD/CAM packages like Autodesk Fusion, Mastercam and Siemens NX.
Instead of a programmer manually selecting tools, speeds, feeds and toolpaths, CAM Assist analyzes the 3D model and automatically generates a professional machining strategy in seconds. The company says it can cut programming time by up to 80% and allows junior operators to produce parts that previously required decades of experience.
Unlike generative AI chatbots, the system is trained on real-world manufacturing data from thousands of parts made in CloudNC's former facilities and partner shops. Recent versions add automated tool selection, collision avoidance, and real-time cost estimation, plus support for 5-axis machines critical for turbine blades, housings and defense components.
Customers reportedly include aerospace suppliers, contract manufacturers and large OEMs using the software to quote jobs faster, reduce scrap, and run machines lights-out overnight.
From London Startup to Transatlantic Player
The new $20 million will be used to accelerate CloudNC's push into North America, which now accounts for the majority of its revenue.
The company opened a U.S. headquarters and is expanding its go-to-market and engineering teams in both London and the U.S. Midwest, close to major aerospace and automotive hubs. Part of the funding will also go toward deeper integrations with machine tool makers and ERP systems.
CEO Theo Saville has framed the strategy as software-first, factory-second: rather than owning factories, CloudNC wants to be the AI layer inside every CNC shop in the world.

CloudNC says the long-term vision goes well beyond programming assistance toward fully autonomous manufacturing.
Upcoming features in development include automated quoting from CAD files, self-optimizing toolpaths that learn from machine feedback, and factory-level scheduling AI that can route jobs across fleets of machines.
The startup is competing in an increasingly crowded field that includes Protolabs, Fictiv, Paperless Parts and a wave of applied-AI entrants, but its focus on the shop floor rather than the marketplace sets it apart.
If the bet pays off, the company argues, AI won't replace machinists — it will amplify them, allowing a shrinking workforce to deliver the surge in sovereign manufacturing capacity the U.S. and UK are now demanding.
