That figure is stunning even by 2026 AI standards. Just over a year ago, Cognition was valued at around $4 billion following its Series B. It then jumped past $10 billion after its opportunistic acquisition of Windsurf in the summer of 2025. Now, at $48 billion, it is worth more than many public SaaS companies and sits firmly in decacorn territory alongside OpenAI, Anthropic, and Databricks.

The round was reportedly led by existing backers including Founders Fund and 8VC, with participation from a sovereign wealth fund and other late-stage crossover investors. What Devin Actually Does Differently Now

Cognition's pitch has evolved far beyond the initial viral videos of Devin completing Upwork tasks. Today, Devin is sold not as a copilot, but as a coworker.

The latest versions of Devin can spin up its own cloud development environment, plan multi-step engineering projects, write, test and debug code, and open pull requests with minimal human supervision. With the Windsurf technology integrated, Cognition now offers both an autonomous agent for end-to-end tickets and a fast IDE assistant for real-time pair programming.

Enterprise customers are reportedly using fleets of Devins to clear backlogs, migrate legacy codebases, and keep services running 24/7. That shift from seat-based assistant to outcome-based agent is central to why investors are willing to pay such a premium.

By The Numbers: Cognition Vs. Cursor Before SpaceX

The most telling comparison is with Cursor, the beloved AI code editor from Anysphere.

Before SpaceX acquired Cursor earlier this year in a deal that shocked Silicon Valley and reshaped the AI talent war, Cursor was last valued privately at around $29.3 billion on roughly $1 billion in annualized revenue. That implied a multiple of about 30x forward ARR, already rich by SaaS standards but justified by triple-digit growth and fanatical developer love.

Cognition, by contrast, is said to be at roughly $400 million to $500 million in ARR today, growing even faster but from a smaller base. At $48 billion, that implies a multiple of roughly 96x to 120x current ARR, or double to triple Cursor's pre-acquisition multiple.

In other words, investors are paying significantly more per dollar of revenue for Cognition than SpaceX paid for Cursor. The bet is that autonomous agents will capture far more value per developer than autocomplete-style editors, and that Cognition's enterprise contracts will compound quickly.

Why Investors Say This Market Has Multiple Winners

With valuations this high, the obvious question is: doesn't one company just win? The VCs writing these checks say no.

Their thesis is that AI coding is not one market, but at least three. There is the individual developer copilot layer dominated by Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude Code. There is the autonomous agent layer where Cognition's Devin, OpenAI's Codex, and Google's Jules compete to complete entire tasks. And there is the underlying model and infrastructure layer powering them all.

Because software runs the entire global economy, even a small slice is massive. If AI can make every engineer 2x to 10x more productive, investors argue the total addressable market expands from $30 billion in developer tools to hundreds of billions in automated engineering labor.

Founders Fund partner Peter Thiel and 8VC's Joe Lonsdale have both framed it as similar to cloud: AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud all became giants despite competing directly. In AI coding, switching costs are low today, workflows are fragmented, and enterprises want at least two vendors for leverage.

What It Signals For The Future Of AI Coding

Cognition's $48 billion price tag does three things at once.

First, it confirms the power shift from models to agents. Raw coding benchmarks no longer drive valuations, real deployment, reliability, and ROI in production codebases do.

Second, it raises the stakes for everyone else. GitHub, Anthropic with Claude Code, OpenAI, Google, and a resurgent Cursor under SpaceX now have to prove they can match Devin's autonomy or own a defensible niche in review, security, and deployment.

Third, it sets up an inevitable IPO showdown. With both Cognition and the combined SpaceX xAI Cursor entity now valued in the tens of billions, public markets will soon decide what an AI software engineer is really worth.

For developers, the takeaway is simpler: the tools writing code are now some of the most valuable software ever built.
