Microsoft Office to be free for devices under 10.1 inches display

Microsoft announced that Microsoft Office is going to be available for free on devices with a screen size of less than 10 inches.

Kirk Koenigsbauer, Corporate Vice President for Office 365 client Apps and Services said that devices bigger than 10.1 inches cannot be classified as a PC or tablet to perform tasks. Microsft is going to classify anything with a screen size of 10.1 inch or less as a true mobile device.

On devices with screen size less than 10.1, Microsoft will offer core editing and viewing experience for free like create new documents, edit and view the documents. If an user wants to enjoy the full benefits he/she will have to get the premium subscription by paying a fee. The subscription only benefits include robust editing and authoring features, 1TB of One Drive storage and 60 minutes of Skype unlimited worldwide calling per month.

In a nut shell, Microsoft's office mobile app will be available for free on Android, iOS and Windows, however in order to enjoy the full Office 365 services and benefits, users will have to purchase the premium subscription for a fee.

The plan here is that, Microsoft wants to offer its productivity suite to a broader audience and by offering it for free, this allows the company to achieve the goal. Koenigsbauer says in less than a year office app has received more than 80 million downloads on iOS.
