Secret Apple lab in Taiwan reportedly developing thinner, brighter displays

If a new report is to be believed, Apple is said to be working on advanced display technologies for iPhone and iPad. Bloomberg reports that, tech giant Apple has opened a secret lab in Taiwan for developing thinner and brighter screens.

Bloomberg citing sources, state that Apple is determined to develop "thinner, lighter, brighter and more efficient" displays than the LCD, which is used on its current generation Apple devices. Apple has recruited at  least 50 engineers to work on new screen for company's future iPhones and iPads. Many of these engineers previously worked for companies like Qualcomm and AU Optronics. The report adds that the facility was previously owned by Qualcomm where it tried to develop power-sipping Mirasol displays. 

Bloomberg says Apple is working on OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) displays, that are not only thinner, but also require no back-lighting. LG and Samsung have employed this tech in screens of their electronic and mobile products.

With this move Apple hopes to reduce its dependence on major display manufacturers such as Samsung, LG and Japan display, which are Apple's LCD display suppliers at present.
