Sundar Pichai's Google for India event highlights


Earlier today, Google CEO Sundar Pichai with other top Google executives, talked about Google's plan to support the Digital India Initiative, at Google for India event in New Delhi. Pichai announced a number of initiative that will help more Indians connect to the web and use web services, especially in rural areas. Here are the highlights-
 

1. Google has partnered with Indian Railways and Railtel to offer free RailWire WiFi inside railway stations. Mumbai Central will be the first station to go online in January 2016, with 100 more stations on the way, by end of 2016, connecting more than 10 million people who pass through every day.
 

2. Google is expanding its programme with Tata Trusts to connect women in rural area, through Internet bikes. "We've hit 1,000 villages so far, and now we are adding resources with the hope of reaching 3,00,000 villages nationwide within three years,"
 

3. Google will launch a programme to train two million Android developers over the next three years. For this Google will closely work with more than 30 universities across the country in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation
 

4. Google is giving 1,000 of "today's best and brightest Indian startups" $20,000 in credit to run their business on Google Cloud Platform.
 

5. Google will teach Indian content creators how to make better videos at the YouTube Space Mumbai Studio.
 

6. Google is exploring ways to bring Project Loon to India. The idea behind the project is to bring internet facilities to hard-to-access rural areas via hot air balloons. As per Google, each balloon can provide connectivity to a ground area about 40km in diameter using a wireless communications technology called LTE or 4G.
 

7. Google is looking at hiring people for Bangalore and Hyderabad office.

8. Google to expand its Hyderabad campus to strengthen capabilities.
 

9. Google will roll out a new feature called ‘Tap to Translate’ that lets users to translate any text instantly right then and there without having to leave the app on the Android devices.
 

10. YouTube to get two new feature - the first one, improved buffering when videos are paused and the second, background downloading for offline caching, which works along with YouTube's offline feature.

11. Google is optimistic of the Indian market, and is expecting that by the year 2016, there will be more number of Android users in India than those in the United States.
 

12. Chromebit is coming to India in January 2016 and will be priced at Rs 7,999.
 

13. Thank You India - Pichai said that India "has given me and Google so much and I just hope we can give much more to the country,". "A lot of what today is about is how we build products for the next billion Indian users, yet to come online." he added
