DataWind launches DroidSurfer Android netbooks in India


Canadian company DataWind, known for its low-cost Rs. 1,100 Aakash tablet, has expanded its product protfoloio with the launch of DroidSufer 7 and DroidSurfer 10 Android powered netbooks in India. The netbooks were launched in the presence of Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, Canada.

The DataWindDroid Surfer 10 comes with 10.1-inch 1026 x 600 touch screen display and is powered by 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor (unspecified) with 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage, further expandable via microSD card. Other features include 0.3-megapixel webcam, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, WiFi HotSpot, WiFi Direct, HDMI port, Micro USB (with OTG) and 6000mAh battery.

The DataWind DroidSurfer 7 has a 7-inch touchscreen with a WVGA (800x400 pixels) resolution, with 512MB RAM, 4GB expandable storage and 4000mAh battery. Rest of the specification are similar to DroidSurfer 10.

They run Android 4.4.2 KitKat and come with tactile responsive keyboards. There is support for external devices like mouse, keyboard or memory card as well. There is no details on other specs at the moment.

"Our goal is to deliver internet, fast, free, anytime and everywhere. The DriodSurfer netbook devices provide the ultimate flexibility between work and play with good battery life," said Suneet Singh Tuli, President & CEO of DataWind. "We want to make learning fun while at the same time want more and more people to join the digital age. Our focus on introduction of ‘just-right’ featured devices at the most affordable prices is our way of contributing to the Digital India Vision," added Mr.Tuli.

The netbooks come bundled with free unlimited internet browsing for one year on Reliance and Telecnor connection on prepaid SIM cards. The free internet does not include audio/video streaming or local downloads. The DataWind DroidSurfer 7 and DroidSurfer 10 has been priced at Rs. 5,999 and Rs. 7,999 respectively. They will be available through retail distribution outlets all over the country.
