Mattel upgrades its View-Master virtual reality headset, coming this fall

Last year, Mattel introduced the $30 View-Master VR headset, based on Google's Cardboard headset, that could hold a smartphone and turn it into a display for VR experience. Now, Mattel announced a new upgraded model called Viewer DLX, that will support more phones and comes with improvements over its predecessor.

The new View-Master called Viewer DLX looks similar to last year's version. However, the smartphone mount on the front has got a redesign, to make the headset compatible with more phones with different size and shape. The latch mechanism has also been redesigned that addresses, so that the phone will not fall when in use. The VR headset will also have a headphone connector, so you don't need to rely on your phone's speaker. In addition, it will come with focal adjustment and improved optical lenses.

Mattel's new VR will be priced at $40 and will go on sale later this year.

In addition to hardware, the Mattel Viewer DLX will come with new VR experience — including a two player labyrinth game (involves guiding a person wearing the View-Master out of a maze with clues from a physical book) and a new dinosaur-themed experience pack, in addition to the current wildlife, space and destination experiences. The labyrinth game will cost $19.99, while the Dinosaur experience pack will retail at $14.99.
