Samsung starts mass production of world's first 512GB NVMe SSD

Samsung has announced that it has begun mass production of NVMe PCIe SSD (Solid State Drive) for next-generation PCs and ultra-slim laptops. It fits all of the SSD components — NAND flash memory, DRAM and controller — in an area not larger than that of a coin. Dubbed PM971-NVMe, the SSDs will be available in storage capacities up to 512GB, and will be available starting in June.

The PM971-NVMe measures 20 x 16 x 1.5mm and weighs just 1 gram. It is approximately a hundreth of a 2.5" SSD or HDD, and the surface area is about a fifth of an M.2 SSD. Samsung was able to cram 16 of its 48-layer 256-gigabit V-NAND flash chips, a 20nm 4GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM chip and a controller into the PM971-NVMe.

The SSD enables sequential read and write speeds of 1500Mbps and 900 Mbps respectively, when used with its TurboWhite technology. It also boasts random read and write IOPS (input output operations per second)  of up to 190K and 150K respectively. It will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options.
