ZTE Axon 7 Is Now The Cheapest Daydream VR Phone At $400

ZTE had announced the Axon 7 in May 2016. The phone shipped with Marshmallow 6.0.1 and was marketed as being the first device to support Google's virtual reality platform - Daydream. However, the Axon 7 was only compatible with the ZTE VR headset at the time of it's launch. Native support for Daydream was introduced by Google in Android Nougat. Since Marshmallow did not have support for Daydream, the Axon 7 users could not enjoy the offerings of Google's Daydream VR platform, even though Axon 7 had the hardware to support the technology.

ZTE has announced the Nougat 7.0 update rollout for the Axon 7. After this update, Axon 7 users will be able to enjoy Daydream on their devices. Nougat 7.0 also introduces many new features such as a customisable quick settings panel, new emojis, quick reply from notifications, data saver and multi-window support. Through Doze On The Go, Nougat 7.0 also improves the battery life drastically.

The release notes of the update can be found below:

  1. Android OS Upgraded from 6.0.1 to 7.0
  2. Axon 7 2017U is Now Daydream Ready! Get a Daydream View to experience VR today.
  3. Camera RAW Implemented in Manual Mode and Enhanced Auto-Focus for Camera.
  4. Google Security Patch Updated to December 2016
  5. Various Device Stability and Security Improvements.
  6. Hiya Caller ID/Blocking added to default dialer.
  7. Miscellaneous Performance Improvements and other Enhancements.
  8. NOTE: Manual Restart Required After Upgrading.

The Axon 7 has joined the likes of Moto Z, Moto Z Force, Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL. These are the only devices in the market at the moment which can run on Google's Daydream platform. The Huawei Mate 9 Pro and the Porche Design variant of the Mate 9 will be updated to support Daydream in the coming months.

However, sitting at $400, the Axon 7 is now the cheapest Daydream-ready handset in the market. If you haven't bought an Axon 7 now, this just might be the right time to go ahead and buy one. Axon 7 is powered by Snapdragon 820 chipset, 20MP/8MP camera and a 4GB RAM. The device sports a Quad HD resolution 5.5-inches AMOLED display and is fuelled by a 3250mAh battery.
