Review: Lenovo ZUK Z2 Plus After Receiving Nougat 7.0 Update, Problems Detailed

Its been a few weeks since the Lenovo ZUK Z2 Plus got the much-awaited Nougat update in India. It started seeding in India almost 2 months after China received it. Well, the update was planned to be rolled out in May but things took a turn and the update rolled out at the end of April which by the way is a good sign but it seems like Lenovo hurried here as this Nougat update (that came in with the build number ZUI 2.5.104) seems to have some issues. We promised to bring in a review for the update and we have thoroughly used the device after receiving the update so here's our review for the same.

First of all let's start with what's good in this update, this device had some features missing out when it used to run Marshmallow, but now that it runs on Nougat, it has got Split Screen for multitasking (not all the apps support this feature) which makes handling multiple tasks and apps very easy. Apart from this, the update brings in Screen Recording which records the screen when you want to and Night Mode which helps using the mobile in low light areas or in the night at ease. Equalizer addition improved the music experience. March 1 security patch improves the security of the device at the software level.

The fingerprint sensor is also a button which holds many new gestures with this update and in the camera department, the manual mode has been added which gives much more control to the user when clicking pictures or recording stuff. Battery life in our use seems to have increased a bit but there isn't much noticeable difference.

While all this makes one install the update, there seems to have some issues too which can't be ignored and a bug fix update is expected in such cases. Problems we faced after installing this update-

  • Lag- The UI is not smooth enough at times and we did face occasional lags at times
  • Bluetooth- This is a weird issue as when the Flight mode is turned on and later off, it triggers the Bluetooth and results to have Bluetooth turned on automatically.
  • Notification Light- The notification light suddenly stops to work when mobile is plugged in for charging and works again only after some restarts which is annoying and requires to be fixed.
  • Screen Issue- Well, this might not happen with everyone but some lines appeared suddenly out of nowhere which required a restart to go back to the normal state.
The update obviously brings in all the Nougat goodies along with it. We have the bundled notifications along with the functionality for a quick reply through the notification itself, the split screen makes multitasking a lot easier, the inbuilt data saver mode restricts the background data usage and the editable quick settings panel is definitely a feature we love. That being said, we would like to see Lenovo fix the bugs in this update. We hope the next OTA update will address these bugs.
