Red's Hydrogen One smartphone is modular and features holographic display

RED, the company popular for its high-end cameras has announced its entry to the smartphone market with the RED Hydrogen One, and calls it the world's first holographic media machine.

The RED Hydrogen One has 5.7-inch hydrogen holographic display, that can seamlessly switch between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, augmented reality, mixed reality, and virtual reality. The company claims that you won't require glasses to view the content on the holographic display.

The phone will also support holographic RED Hydrogen 4-View content (H4V), which can be found in the RED channel. It features a proprietary H30 algorithm that converts stereo sound to multi-dimensional audio, and the company claims the sound experience would be as good as plugging 5.1 audio out headphones.

Taking design ideas from Motorola's Moto Z line, the RED Hydrogen One will have a modular design, with connector pins located at the back to attach modular components, that will be released in future. These modular components will help shooting high-quality videos and images, as well as HYDROGEN format holographic images.

Although the entire specs was not revealed, the device does come with 3.5mm audio jack, microSD card slot, USB Type-C port, according to the teaser image. They will also have front and rear cameras, but will not produce cinema quality image. This is where the modular system come to play for a professional camera type experience. And the device will ship with Android operating system.

The Hydrogen One carries a hefty price tag of $1195 for the Aluminum version, and $1595 for the Titanium model. It is now available for pre-order and shipping begins Q1, 2018. Note that the device will only be available in the US.
