Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 starts receiving Android Nougat

Xiaomi's best-selling mid-ranger, the Redmi Note 4 released in India back in January this year running MIUI 8 based Android Marshmallow out of the box. However, today it is getting the much-awaited Nougat treatment in the form of MIUI 8.5.4.0.

The update is sized at 1.3GB and is rolling out over-the-air in phases, so not all users will get it immediately. To check for the update go to Settings ->About Phone -> Software Update.

Along with a slew of new features, the update brings performance improvement and the July Android security patch with it. Here's some of the new features included with this update:

Support for exFAT SD cards
Separate App locks for Dual apps
Option for hiding the content of notifications on Lock screen New – Verification SMS are shown on the Lock screen only after the Lock screen password is entered
Slide to browse wallpapers
Renaming albums
Custom groups for albums with people
Pausing ongoing backups
Redesigned the Music app
Personal hotspot is now mutually recognizable by iOS devices
Separate updates for the system apps
Switches for common settings in search results
Introducing Screen recorder
Export birthday reminders from Contacts
Added official holidays for Indonesia, Malaysia, and Russia
Countdowns for exams, repayments, vacations, etc.
Anniversary reminders for important events
Calculating discounts
Manage to autostart for multiple system apps

To recap, the Redmi Note 4 features 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display, Snapdragon 625 chip, 13MP/5MP cameras, 4G VoLTE and 4100mAh battery. It is offered three variants 2GB RAM/32GB storage for Rs. 9,999; 3GB RAM/32GB storage at Rs. 10,999; and 4GB RAM/64GB storage at Rs. 12,999.

The Redmi Note 4 will also get MIUI 9 update also based on Android Nougat soon. MIUI 9 boasts more dynamic resource allocation for a fluid experience, faster app launch times, and bring multi-window support, smart-assistant, universal image search and more. Some of these features will be limited to China.
