Google's Family Link app gives parents more control of their kid's device

Google's parental control app for Android devices "Family Link" has come out of beta stage and is now available to download in the U.S. The app is designed to control their child's Android devices and lets parents manage apps, set screen time limits and device bedtimes.

When setting up your kid's Android device, Google will ask you to create an account. Then you'll have to provide your kid's birthday, and if they're under 13, you'll be asked to provide consent to create the account. Once done, Family Link will automatically be downloaded to your kid's device, and you can choose the apps and settings that you want for your child.

Once your kid's device is setup, download Family Link on your own device and you can use it do things like:
  • Manage the apps your kid can use: Approve or block the apps your kid wants to download from Google Play Store
  • Keep an eye on screen time: See how much time kids spend on apps with weekly or monthly reports, and set daily screen time limits for their device
  • Set device bedtime: Remotely lock your kid's device when it's time to study or sleep
The app is also available for iOS device but some features are not available. The iOS app comes with a 'Restrictions' section, that's focused more on what apps  child can use and lets you configure privacy and other settings. However, Family Link for iOS devices does not allow parents to set time limits, remotely lock a device or view activity reports on app usage.

Family Link can control any Android device running Nougat and higher and select Marshmallow devices. On the other hand parents device's should run Android 4.4 and higher or iOS 9 and higher.

The app is currently available only in the U.S as a free download from Google Play Store and Apple's App store.
