HMD Releases Oreo Beta For Nokia 5, Nokia 6 To Follow Soon
Other than Google, Nokia is one of the only brands which regularly update their devices. The Nokia 3, 5 and 6 were assured of an update to Oreo in June and HMD more recently committed to upgrade the devices to Android P. To test out new Android releases, HMD announced "Nokia phones beta labs" in October. The program was initially started to test out Oreo for the Nokia 8. After a month of testing, the Nokia 8 got the stable Oreo update last month. HMD has now opened the beta program for the Nokia 5.
Interested Nokia 5 owners can sign up for the beta program from here. For the signing up process, you will be asked to validate your device by the IMEI number. After your device model has been verified, you will receive an OTA update to Oreo 8.0. The OTA notification might take about twelve hour to show up. Alternatively, you can also head over to Settings > About phone > Check for updates and initiate the update download from therein. It is worth noting that since this is a beta software, it might be susceptible to bugs.
HMD's Juho Sarvikas has said that the beta testing program will soon expand to the Nokia 6. If the update timeline for the Nokia 8 is anything to go by, the Nokia 5 might be getting the stable Oreo update before the end of the year.
