Mi 6X Is Now Available In China With Snapdragon 660, AI Dual Cameras, NO Headphone Jack & More

Xiaomi's Mi 5X was a better success when it was rebranded to as Mi A1 and sold with stock Android instead of MIUI. In fact, when Xiaomi held a poll asking the members of Twitterati to choose between its own skin MIUI and stock Android, users voted majority for the latter. It is clear that there are Xiaomi fans who want the Chinese company to make phones with stock Android. Well, that just might soon be happening. Yesterday, Xiaomi announced the Mi 6X in China, and given the success of Android One Mi A1, Xiaomi should launch the 6X as the Android One Mi A2 in markets outside China.

Throughout the launch event, Xiaomi was all praise for the camera of the 6X. Xiaomi compared the Mi 6X's dual 12MP+20MP setup at the back with the iPhone X, and touted photos of the 6X to be superior. The main 12 MP sensor is the Sony IMX486 which has an aperture of f/1.75 aperture and 1.25 μm pixel size. The secondary 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor acts as a depth sensor for portrait shots and is used alongside the primary sensor for capturing images in low light. The front snapper is the same as the secondary camera lens, that is, a 20MP IMX376 sensor. According to Xiaomi, both the secondary and front camera use the "pixel binning technology" to produce better low light images. Although binning means to throw something away, data binning is different. Quoting Wikipedia, 'Statistical data binning is a way to group a number of more or less continuous values into a smaller number of "bins".' So, in the pixel binning technology, the 20 megapixels are divided into groups of four, each being 5MP. The information from each of the four pixels is clubbed to create one large 2.0µm pixel. The resultant image is 5MP, but is less noisy and is "clearer and brighter".

In addition to the pixel binning technology, Xiaomi is also making use of AI-based algorithms to further fine tune the images. The Mi 6X will come with AI enhancements for over 200 scenes (including 12 different portrait modes). Xiaomi claims that the AI functionality will improve over time and will provide superior details. The AI technology is used on both the front and back cameras, and the front camera can take portrait selfies, with the bokeh effect being applied by the software.

Now that we have covered the major highlight of the Mi 6X - its camera - let's take a look at its specifications and pricing.
