Xiaomi Pulls Oreo 8.1 Update For Mi A1

After a quick round of internal testing, Xiaomi started rolling out the stable version of Android 8.1 to the Mi A1 yesterday. However, as many users found out, the update was more of a disappointment than delight.

There were several bugs in the update that plagued the users. Firstly, if the Messages app was wiped from the recent memory, the update would erase all of the stored messages. Secondly, several users reported that their Mi A1 failed the SafetyNet check after the update was installed. SafetyNet provides developers with APIs to check whether a device has been tampered with. There are checks for root access or any other mod that might compromise the security of the device. SafetyNet is used by several banking apps and payment portals.

Owing to the seriousness of the bugs, Xiaomi has withdrawn the OTA update. The company will soon be rolling out a new Oreo 8.1 update which doesn't have any of these bugs. If you lost your messages because of this update, I doubt there is anything Xiaomi can do to invert that. We will keep you posted of further developments.
