Previously, Ring videos were encrypted in transit and at rest, but the new standard applies a more robust, authenticated encryption model for cloud storage with keys managed securely by Ring's servers. For the vast majority of users, the change is automatic and invisible — no firmware update or manual toggle is needed. If you already use Ring Protect and store videos in the cloud, your future recordings will simply be stored under the new standard.

Users who had already enabled Ring's optional End-to-End Encryption will not be changed. Their setting will remain active unless they choose to switch back to Standard Encryption.

Why Ring Is Making The Move Now

The change comes as smart camera makers face growing pressure to balance convenience with privacy. Ring says the new default is designed to raise the security floor for all users without breaking the cloud-powered features most customers rely on.

By making stronger encryption the default rather than an opt-in, Ring closes a gap where many users never changed their security settings at all. It also aligns Ring more closely with Amazon Web Services' broader security standards, using centralized key management with enhanced protections against unauthorized access, while still preserving the functionality that differentiates Ring from offline-only systems.

The company has emphasized that even with Standard Encryption, Ring employees cannot view customer videos without explicit customer consent via features like Ring Assist, and law enforcement requests still require valid legal process or user permission through the Neighbors app.

Standard Encryption vs. End-to-End Encryption: What's The Difference

This is where most confusion lies, and Ring now offers two distinct tiers of protection:

Standard Encryption (The New Default): Your video is encrypted on your Ring device, during upload, and while stored in the cloud. The encryption keys are stored and managed securely on Ring's servers. This allows Ring's cloud to decrypt and process the video to provide intelligent features. Think of it as a highly secure vault where Ring holds a copy of the key to help you use your content.

End-to-End Encryption (The Optional, Maximum-Privacy Mode): Your video is encrypted on your Ring device and can only be decrypted on a trusted, enrolled mobile device (like your iPhone or Android phone). No one, including Ring and Amazon, holds the key or can access the unencrypted video in the cloud. The cloud essentially stores an unreadable, locked file that only your phone can open.

In short: Standard Encryption protects your data from outsiders but keeps it usable for Ring's services. End-to-End Encryption protects your data from everyone, including Ring itself.

The Feature Trade-Off: What You Gain and Lose

Choosing between the two comes down to privacy versus functionality. Ring is transparent that you cannot have both at the maximum level.

With Standard Encryption (Default), you keep access to the full Ring ecosystem:

  • Rich event previews and animated thumbnail notifications
  • Person, package, pet, and vehicle detection with Ring Protect
  • Alexa integrations, including Echo Show live view and Alexa announcements
  • Shared Users, Ring Home shared access, and web access via Ring.com
  • Quick Replies, event history timeline, and video processing for motion alerts

With End-to-End Encryption enabled, you get maximum privacy but lose many cloud-dependent features:

  • No video previews in notifications — you'll get a generic alert that motion was detected
  • No Alexa, web browser, or Shared User access to encrypted videos
  • No Ring AI features like Smart Alerts, package detection, or person detection
  • Video access is limited only to enrolled mobile devices, and if you lose your device and passphrase, you will lose access to your encrypted videos permanently
  • Some device setup features and Live View on certain models may be limited

How to Check Your Setting and Choose What's Right For You

For most households that rely on Alexa, shared family access, or AI alerts, Ring recommends staying on the new Standard Encryption. It provides strong protection against breaches and unauthorized access while keeping the smart features intact.

For users with the highest privacy needs — such as those monitoring interior spaces or who want to ensure no third party can ever access their footage under any circumstances — End-to-End Encryption remains the better choice.

You can check or change your setting at any time:

  1. Open the Ring app and tap Control Center from the main menu.
  2. Tap Video Encryption.
  3. Under Advanced Settings, you will see your current mode: Standard Encryption or End-to-End Encryption.
  4. To enable E2EE, tap Enable End-to-End Encryption and follow the prompts to enroll your mobile device and create a 10-word passphrase. Keep this passphrase safe — Ring cannot recover it for you.
  5. To switch back to Standard Encryption, disable E2EE in the same menu. You will need to re-enroll devices.

Ring notes that switching modes will not retroactively re-encrypt or delete old videos. Videos recorded under one mode will remain under that mode's protection until they expire per your Ring Protect retention settings.

The Bottom Line

Ring's move doesn't force users into a single privacy model, but it does make the baseline far more secure by default. For the average user, the new Standard Encryption is a seamless security upgrade with no downside. For privacy purists, the true zero-access End-to-End option is still there — you just have to consciously choose it and accept the trade-offs.
