Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra Launches with Nvidia AI Chips and Revamped Windows 11

TL;DR

  • Microsoft's new Surface Laptop Ultra ditches Intel/Qualcomm for Nvidia N1-series AI chips, delivering over 200 TOPS of on-device AI power for local models and agents.
  • The 14-inch and 16-inch OLED lineup starts at $1,899 with 32GB RAM, RTX-class graphics, and up to 22 hours of battery, shipping October 28 with revamped Windows 11.
  • With an agentic version of Windows 11 built for on-device Copilot, Microsoft is positioning the Ultra as its direct answer to Apple's M-series MacBooks in the AI PC race.

Nvidia Inside: A New Brain for Surface

Microsoft is making its biggest bet yet on AI PCs. The company has officially revealed the Surface Laptop Ultra, a premium new tier above the Surface Laptop line built from the ground up around Nvidia processors instead of Intel, AMD, or Qualcomm.

At the heart of both models is what Microsoft and Nvidia are calling the Nvidia N1 Ultra platform, a co-engineered Arm-based system-on-chip with a 20-core CPU, RTX-class integrated GPU with DLSS 4 support, and a dedicated neural engine capable of more than 200 TOPS. That's nearly 5x the AI performance of last year's Snapdragon X Elite Copilot+ PCs.

Microsoft says the goal wasn't just faster AI, but local AI. The Laptop Ultra is designed to run large language models up to 70B parameters on-device, power autonomous Copilot agents without the cloud, and handle generative video, 3D rendering, and real-time translation simultaneously.

Performance Upgrades and Key Features

Beyond the chip swap, this is a full redesign. Both the 14-inch and 16-inch models get a new ultra-thin aluminum chassis, 3K 120Hz OLED touch displays with HDR and anti-reflective coating, and a massive haptic touchpad.

Microsoft is promising up to 22 hours of video playback on the 14-inch model and 20 hours on the 16-inch, despite the huge jump in power. Base configurations now start with 32GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 1TB SSD, scalable to 128GB RAM and 4TB storage for developers and creators — a first for Surface.

Other headline features include Wi-Fi 7, optional 5G, a new 1440p AI camera with on-chip background blur and eye-contact correction, quad studio mics, and a neural cooling system that Microsoft claims stays silent under 20dB during most AI workloads. Gamers and creators also get ray tracing and Nvidia Studio certification, with Microsoft demoing Cyberpunk 2077 and Blender running natively on Arm at over 80 fps with DLSS.

Pricing, Specs and Availability

The Surface Laptop Ultra lineup starts at $1,899 for the 14-inch model with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage. The 16-inch starts at $2,199, with fully loaded Creator editions topping out at $3,999.

Pre-orders are open now, with retail availability starting October 28 in the US, UK, Canada, and 12 other markets. Business versions with Windows 11 Pro, NFC for security keys, and swappable SSDs will follow in November.

Microsoft is also bundling three months of Microsoft 365 Copilot Pro and six months of Nvidia AI Foundry credits to push developers to build on-device agents for the platform.

Windows 11 Rebuilt for the Agentic Era

The hardware only tells half the story. The Laptop Ultra will be the first device to ship with Microsoft's revamped Windows 11 agentic update, rolling out broadly this fall.

The new OS puts Copilot at the system level, not just as a sidebar. Users can ask Copilot to chain actions across apps — like pulling numbers from Excel, building a PowerPoint, booking travel, and summarizing Teams threads — all processed locally when possible for speed and privacy.

Key additions include Recall 2.0, Live Captions with real-time translation for 60 languages, AI Explorer, Paint Cocreator with on-device diffusion, and Agent Store, a new section of the Microsoft Store for downloadable AI agents for coding, research, and productivity.

Microsoft says Nvidia's software stack, including CUDA on Arm, TensorRT-LLM, and RTX AI Toolkits, will let developers port existing AI apps to Windows on Arm in days, solving one of the biggest app-compatibility headaches of previous Arm Surfaces.

Where Microsoft Stands in the AI Computing Race

With the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft is no longer just selling Windows licenses for other companies' AI PCs — it's defining the reference design itself.

The move puts direct pressure on Apple, whose M4 and expected M5 MacBook Pros have dominated creative performance and battery life, and on Intel's Panther Lake and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Elite, both promising their own 100+ TOPS laptops for 2026.

Analysts see the Nvidia partnership as Microsoft's answer to Apple's vertical integration: control the chip, the OS, and the AI model layer together. If on-device agents become as big as Microsoft predicts, having the most powerful neural engine on Windows could give it a two-year lead.

The real test will be battery life under real AI loads, Arm app support, and whether consumers will pay Ultra prices for AI they can't yet see. But for now, Microsoft has made its message clear: the future of Windows isn't just AI-assisted — it's AI-native, and it runs on Nvidia.
