Samsung may stop making flat-screened Galaxy S flagship phones in the future

Last year, the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge started a new trend of edge displays in smartphones. Taking the trend forward, earlier this year the company launched the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. The edge variant was positively received by customers and became a success which eventually took toll on sales of the flat-screened version. The Galaxy S7 edge proved to be one of the most popular smartphone of 2016.

With the recently launched Galaxy Note7, Samsung also opted for dual curved edge displays instead of flat-screen, and now it appears like Samsung will end making flat screen Galaxy S flagship lineup in the near future.

Samsung Mobile Chief Dong-jin Koh in an interview with Korea Herald told that "Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen)."-Koh Dong-jin, Samsung Mobile"

Meanwhile, one analyst somewhat agrees with the statement, saying the if Galaxy Note7's curved edge display receives positive response in the market, Samsung will likely ditch the Galaxy S flat-screened models in the future. The analyst doesn't see Samsung in a rush to kill the flat screen model starting with next year's Galaxy S8 flagship.

"Samsung will not likely get rid of the flat-screen Galaxy S smartphone model right away, but if the market response is positive with the Note 7, it would surely serve as a cue for Samsung to focus only on the Edge model." – Market Analyst.
