Reliance Jio 4G speeds lowest in India shows TRAI data

A few days back  Ookla released a report based on speed tests conducted in India since the launch of Reliance Jio, which showed drop in 4G data speeds month over month. Now Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has published a new data on MySpeed website that reveals 4G speeds on Jio's network is the slowest among top telecos in the country.

The data posted on TRAI's newly launched analytic portal shows the the average pan-India 4G download speed of Jio stand at 6.2Mbps, which is less compared to Airtel, Anil Ambani led RCom and Vodafone. Airtel topped the results with 4G speeds of 11.4Mbps, RCom at 7.9Mbps, Idea's at 7.6Mbps and Vodafone's at 7.3Mbps. The results are based on 15,52,857 speed tests.

As for the upload speeds, Jio is on the fourth spot with 2.4Mbps while Idea topped the chart at 4.1Mbps followed by Vodafone at 4Mbps (2nd), Airtel at 3.7Mbps (3rd), and RCom at 2.1Mbps (5th).

The data further shows that Jio customers in Jammu and Kashmir are getting the fastest download speeds of 11.17Mbps, and the lowest download speeds are in Kerala at 3.74Mbps. Similarly, the upload speeds are best in J&K at 3.48Mbps and lowest in Kerala at 1.42Mbps.

TRAI says that the results represent the average of the data speed samples collected from various consumers of the TSPs on a crowd sourcing basis during speed test initiated by them.

To defend TRAI's claims, Jio said that the 4G data speed on its network is being measured after customers exhausted daily FUP (fair usage policy) limit of 4G data download per day. Post exhaustion, the FUP limit falls to 256Kbps.

In a press statement, Reliance Jio said, "Under the Jio Welcome Offer, there is a daily fair usage policy (FUP) limit of 4GB data consumption per user. This limit has been setup with the express intention of preventing heavy data users from degrading the experience of other users.

Before this FUP limit is reached, Jio customers enjoy unmatched 4G LTE speeds on the Jio network. However, after the FUP usage limit is reached, speeds are reduced to 256kbps. Full 4G LTE speeds are once again restored once the next 24-hour period begins.

Historically, we have observed that a disproportionate number of speed tests are performed once the FUP comes into effect. This is so since most users don’t consider performing the test until they observe a deterioration of speed. Such users also tend to perform multiple tests until full speeds are restored.

Given that data usage under Jio Welcome Offer is completely free, a higher proportion of Jio users run up against the FUP limit. In comparison, not all non-Jio users have FUP based plans (rather their usage is completely stopped, and they are entirely prevented from performing the speed test), and even those who have FUP based plans face this situation only once a month. Further, such customers tend to recharge quickly and restore full speeds."

Jio also said that it is continuously measuring the speeds experienced by its customers, for adjusting factors such as FUP, and is working on improving 4G service for all its customers.
